CLINICAL RESULTS— LACTOBACILLUS ACIDOPHILUS R0052
In 1995 Dr. N. V. Kharchenko of the Academy of Post-Graduate
Medicine, Kiev, Ukraine clinically tested the efficacy of
Lactobacillus rhamnosus R0011 used as an adjuvant in the treatment
of chronic gastroenteric disorders.
Kharchenko treated four groups in four
independent studies using proprietary yogurt
strains plus L. rhamnosus R0011. There were GO patients
with dysbiosis; 20 patients with chronic enterocolitis; and a
control group of 20 patients on standard drug therapy for dysbiosis
or enterocolitis. Adding the probiotic supplement to the drug
therapy greatly improved outcomes for the test groups compared to
controls. For all patients the pre-trial symptoms included pain,
nausea, heartburn and flatulence. Symptoms were present in 80 to
1000/0 of patients prior to treatment. After two weeks on
combination therapy (taking 3 to 5 capsules per day with
meals) the same symptoms were reduced to levels of 5 to 200/a.
Approximately 500/0 of trial subjects taking probiotics gained
weight over the two-week period and Dr. Kharchenko noted that mood
and ability to sleep improved remarkably.
CONCLUSION AND SUMMARY
Lactic bacteria
are microorganisms
found in the
entire length of the digestive tract as well as in the
females vagina. One of their characteristics is that they convert
sugars into lactic acid. The most prominent lactic bacteria in the
small intestine are lactobacilli. In the large intestine,
bifidobacteria predominate.
The scientific
study of lactic acid bacteria began around the turn of the
century. It was mainly Elie Metchnikoff of the Pasteur Institute who
first aroused interest in this field. He developed the theory that
intestinal lactic microflora have major antiputrefactive functions
and play a role in the aging process and mortality.
Many factors
can modify the desirable harmony of intestinal microflora .
The most common ones are intestinal diseases, stress, aging,
unbalanced nutrition, eating contaminated foods, x-ray radiation of
the abdomen and broad-spectrum antibiotics. These factors favor the
proliferation of putrefactive infectious microorganisms at the
expense of desirable microflora and are consequently associated with
such conditions as chronic constipation, diarrhea and poor
digestion.
It is now
well-documented that many lactic bacteria species are
essential or desirable for good health. In brief, they have the
following actions:

CLINICAL RESULTS— LACTOBACILLUS ACIDOPHILUS R0052
Lactobacillus acidophilus R0052 has remarkable efficacy for treating
gastrointestinal dyspepsia. One published report on a study
of 30 patients who took L acidophilus R0052 daily
after breakfast for two weeks noted how well it worked to resolve
most symptoms of dyspepsia in the group. The Czech gastroenterology
specialist Dr. J. Kocian was in charge of this study. Objective
measures of treatment outcomes were recorded. At the same time, the
patients rank-ordered their own appraisal of symptoms. Dr. Kocian
reported that on both scores Lactobacillus acidophilus RO052 proved
"highly effective."

Using probiotic supplements as bio-therapeutic agents has the
advantage of offering multiple mechanisms of activity that
go to work simultaneously throughout the entire digestive system.
Through these multiple mechanisms they help protect adults or

prolonged period to assure well-balanced digestion.
